Pair of Armchairs, Model No. 423 – Jacob & Josef Kohn, Vienna, circa 1905
A rare and elegant pair of bentwood armchairs from the renowned Viennese manufacturer Jacob & Josef Kohn, dating to around 1905. Model No. 423 is a refined example of early Secessionist design, characterized by its distinctive horseshoe-shaped seat and the rhythmic arrangement of vertical slats that define both the backrest and the sides.
The architectural composition is further enhanced by the gently curved lower stretcher and the sculptural connection of the seat frame, subtly accentuated by spherical elements—details that reflect the transition from historicism to the more geometric language of the Vienna Secession.
Crafted from bent beechwood, both armchairs have been professionally restored to a high standard. The surfaces have been hand-polished with traditional shellac, resulting in a deep, warm glow that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The seats have been newly upholstered in high-quality genuine leather, secured with decorative brass studs, adding both comfort and a refined visual contrast.
The pair presents in excellent condition, combining historical authenticity with careful restoration.
A highly decorative and increasingly rare model, ideal for collectors of Viennese Secession furniture or as statement seating in a refined interior.
