An out of the ordinary brisé fan, made of tortoise, ca 1870. Brisé fans were very fashionable in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The model is the oldest known form of a fan, originated in Japan. During the Japan craze of the last half of the 19th century, they became high fashion. Tortoise was a very exotic material, imported from a.o. Asia and therefore expensive. All these components made this a high end fan, not affordable for just anyone.
