This is "The Other Side (Steidl Edition)," a photobook by Nan Goldin, one of America's leading female photographers. Like Nobuyoshi Araki and others, she is a representative photographer of American "personal photography," and, perhaps in response to the "second personal photography boom" in Japan in the 1990s, Goldin frequently visited Japan during that period, collaborating with Araki and others. This is a revised and expanded new edition of a collection of Goldin's representative works, originally published in 1992. While living in Boston as a student, she began photographing drag queens, transgender people, and other outsiders who gathered at the bar "The Other Side." Her gaze expanded beyond America, reaching Berlin, Bangkok, and the Philippines. This collection documents "happy people who transcended gender" from the 1970s to the 1990s, and this expanded edition published by Steidl includes updated works up to around 2010.
