Roman Unguentarium – Roman Empire – 2nd Century BC to 3rd Century AD
A fine Roman terracotta unguentarium of elegant proportions, featuring a globular body, elongated cylindrical neck, and gently everted rim. Vessels of this type were widely employed throughout the Roman world for the storage of perfumes, scented oils, cosmetics, and medicinal substances. They frequently accompanied the deceased in funerary contexts and are among the most characteristic forms of Roman small ceramic containers.
This example displays an attractive natural surface with archaeological deposits and a warm earthen coloration developed through centuries of burial. The vessel remains unrestored, preserving its authentic ancient fabric and original appearance. Minor age-related wear, surface accretions, and small imperfections are consistent with its considerable antiquity. Its well-preserved profile and untouched condition make it a particularly appealing example of Roman utilitarian pottery.
