Fowler & Co. Universal-Blitz-Rechner "Kurze Scala" – Circular Pocket Slide Rule – England, c. 1920–1923
Rare Universal-Blitz-Rechner "Kurze Scala", manufactured by Fowler & Co., Manchester, England, for the German market around 1920–1923.
This compact circular logarithmic slide rule was designed as a portable calculating instrument for merchants, engineers, exporters, importers and other professionals. Using logarithmic scales, it performs multiplication, division, percentages and other calculations following the same mathematical principles as a traditional slide rule, but in a convenient pocket-sized format.
-The instrument is marked:
Universal-Blitz-Rechner – Kurze Scala
Fowler & Co., Manchester
Patent
It is accompanied by its original German-language instruction booklet bearing the D.R.G.M. (Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster) designation, confirming its distribution for the German market. A documented example of the same "Kurze Scala" model with the nearby serial number 10468 has been dated to approximately 1920, supporting the dating of this example.
-Serial number: 10515
-Included
Fowler & Co. Universal-Blitz-Rechner "Kurze Scala"
Original fitted presentation case
Original German-language instruction booklet
-Condition:
The calculator has been tested and is in working condition. Both knurled controls rotate smoothly and independently as intended, allowing the logarithmic scale and indicator to move freely.
The instrument remains in good original condition with age-related surface wear, light scratches and signs of careful use consistent with its age of approximately one century.
The original presentation case is included but is incomplete. The lower part of the closing catch is missing, therefore the case no longer closes securely. The case also shows expected wear, including fraying and partial separation of the silk lining near the hinge.
The original German-language instruction booklet is complete and remains fully readable, showing folds, creases and age-related toning.
Dimensions (closed case)
11.4 × 9 × 2.5 cm
Weight: 153 g
A scarce and complete early 20th-century analogue calculating instrument manufactured by Fowler & Co. for the German market. The original instruction booklet, original fitted case and smoothly operating mechanism make this an attractive collector's piece for enthusiasts of scientific instruments, slide rules and the history of analogue computing.
