Pipă Meerschaum - Argint, meerschaum

antique block meerschaum smoking pipe of generous, larger-than-average size, in the classic Bulldog/Chimney form with a tall, straight-sided bowl and right-angle shank. The pipe is fitted with a silver ferrule stamped 900 (90% fine silver), most likely of Austro-Hungarian or German origin, and a horn mouthpiece/stem, identifiable by its characteristic fine vertical grain. The bowl is engraved with the letter "A" on the side, likely denoting a former owner's initial. The pipe survives with its original fitted travel case, lined in gold silk velvet with brass hook clasps. Notably substantial in scale for a meerschaum of this style — both the bowl and the case are on the larger side compared to typical examples of the period, suggesting this was made as a premium or "table" pipe rather than a small pocket pipe. Details: Material: Block meerschaum bowl; silver (900) ferrule; horn stem/mouthpiece Pipe weight: 54g Pipe dimensions: 17.5 x 6 x 4 cm (larger than average for the type) Total weight incl. case: 115g Case dimensions: 20 x 9 x 6 cm Marks: "900" silver fineness stamp on ferrule; engraved "A" on bowl exterior Origin/Period: Continental Europe (Austria/Germany), circa 1880–1920 (late Victorian/Edwardian era) Provenance: Unknown; engraved initial "A" suggests a named former owner, not yet identified Condition: Meerschaum shows light natural coloring/patina consistent with age and use; horn stem shows expected grain texture, light surface wear and residue consistent with age; silver ferrule shows light tarnish; case shows wear to velvet lining and exterior corners; no visible cracks or chips noted to bowl "The stem fits the shank correctly with a snug, well-aligned mortise-and-tenon connection — no looseness or misalignment. However, the tenon insert/bushing lining shows visible wear: there's brownish discoloration and light staining around the airway opening, along with minor pitting or roughness at the inner edge, rather than a clean, uniform finish. This indicates the fitting has seen prior use rather than being factory-fresh." Meerschaum pipes with silver-mounted ferrules and horn stems were prized smoking accessories in the 19th and early 20th centuries, valued for the mineral's light weight, cool smoking properties, and its ability to develop a rich amber patina with use. The larger proportions of this example point to it being a higher-grade piece, likely intended for home rather than pocket use. Complete with its original fitted case, it represents a well-preserved period piece.
