The material has the pale ivory-cream tone and fine, slightly porous surface typical of meerschaum or a similarly carved mineral/composition material, with warm honey-amber toning developing around the shank from years of handling and smoking — a natural patina consistent with age and use. The bowl is fitted with a bright yellow-metal (brass or possibly gilt-metal/silver-gilt) rim cap and hinged lid, pierced with small air vents and a thumb-catch, allowing the pipe to be smoked with the lid closed — a practical, traveling-pipe feature common on 19th-century pipes. A matching yellow-metal ferrule joins the bowl to the shank. The stem/mouthpiece is a separate, detachable horn mouthpiece — not amber, but a deep blackish-brown, faintly translucent and cloudy/streaky material consistent with buffalo or ox horn. Horn is naturally thermoplastic, softening gently with heat and holding a new shape once cooled — a property confirmed firsthand during this pipe's history (see Condition below), and one which clearly distinguishes it from amber, vulcanite, or early plastics, none of which reshape in this way. Style & Likely Origin The all-over pierced "basketwork" carving, hinged metal lid, and detachable horn stem are characteristic of 19th-century European (likely Continental — Austrian, German, or French) meerschaum pipe-making traditions, an era when meerschaum pipes were produced with elaborate hand-carved decoration and often housed in bespoke fitted cases for the discerning smoker. Condition Very good condition for age. The bowl shows no visible cracks or chips to the pierced carving; the natural colouring/patina is even and attractive. The metal lid and mounts show light surface tarnish/oxidation consistent with age, with no obvious dents. The horn stem had minor heat exposure at some point in its history (left in warm conditions), causing a slight loss of curvature; this has since been carefully corrected by gentle reshaping, a standard and fully reversible characteristic of horn, and no damage or discoloration resulted. The case is presentable with expected age wear to the velvet exterior and felt lining (light rubbing/soiling), and the clasp and hinges remain functional.
