The image shows a young schoolboy walking alone along a village street in Dzūkija, Lithuania, carrying a traditional school satchel and a tall plant above his head. The photograph combines documentary observation with a poetic and deeply human atmosphere – qualities for which Sutkus is internationally recognised. The photograph was taken in Dzūkija in 1969 as part of Sutkus’ work documenting everyday life in Lithuania. This example is a later gelatin silver print, printed in 2009, using traditional wet darkroom printing on high-quality fibre-based baryta photographic paper. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription with the artist’s name, title and date: “Antanas Sutkus Village Street, Childhood Dzūkija, 1969” There is also a handwritten signature/inscription “A.
