An Antique Style Gilt & Lacquered Figure of a Preaching Buddha (Dharmachakra Mudra) Iconography & Symbolism: This finely detailed Buddha is depicted seated in meditation atop a lotus throne, with hands held in the Dharmachakra Mudra (the gesture of preaching and turning the Wheel of Dharma). Material & Composition: The statue is crafted from a heavy stone/ceramic composite core following traditional Asian sculptural methods. The flush base features a solid ceramic/stone-like sealing face that encloses the inner ritual core. The surface retains rich layers of traditional gold leaf gilding applied over an authentic dark red lacquer primer. There is significant, natural wear and loss to the gilding on the reverse, neck, and head areas, exposing the rich underlying core material and giving the piece a magnificent, time-honored antique patina.
