Demeyere – Art Deco Smoking Stand / Ashtray Table – Chrome & Bakelite – Belgium – 1930s Rare and highly decorative Art Deco smoking stand by Demeyere, Belgium, dating from the 1930s. An exceptional example of Belgian Art Deco design, combining highly polished chrome-plated metal with contrasting black Bakelite elements. The striking geometric construction, stepped circular base and streamlined forms are characteristic of the modernist Art Deco aesthetic of the period. This multifunctional smoking stand features a large rotating/swivelling circular side table, together with an integrated smoking section consisting of a chrome-plated ashtray with black cover and its distinctive curved support. The stand also incorporates smaller holders and fittings intended for smoking accessories. The combination of the tall architectural column, geometric supports, chrome surfaces and black details gives the piece a particularly elegant and sculptural appearance. Even today, it works beautifully as a decorative object in an Art Deco, modernist or eclectic interior. Demeyere was a Belgian manufacturer particularly appreciated today for its distinctive Art Deco and modernist household objects and smoking accessories. Original examples of these elaborate smoking stands have become increasingly sought after by collectors of Belgian Art Deco, vintage design and tobacco-related objects. This is therefore not merely a vintage standing ashtray, but a genuine collector’s item and characteristic piece of Belgian Art Deco design from the 1930s. The smoking stand has survived in attractive vintage condition and retains a strong overall appearance. The chrome still presents beautifully, with an attractive reflective finish. As can be expected from an object almost 100 years old, there are signs of age and use, including small scratches, marks, wear and other imperfections. Please study all photographs very carefully, as they form an important and integral part of the description and provide the best impression of the exact condition, completeness and signs of age and use. The separate components shown in the photographs are included in the sale. A rare opportunity to acquire a striking and increasingly collectible example of Belgian Art Deco design by Demeyere, combining functionality with the glamour and sophisticated geometric styling of the 1930s.
