Catawiki Live: Artă clasică și contemporană (Havisham & Co.)

Ritual I este o lucrare contemporană distinctivă a lui Devon, reprezentând un lebăr stilizat sau… greșesc: este un lebăr? Wait. Swans. Let's write properly.

Ritual I is a distinctive contemporary work by Devon, depicting a stylised swan rendered against an intense turquoise background. The composition is deliberately pared back, reducing the bird to bold, graphic forms while retaining enough subtle modelling and texture to give the figure a tangible, almost sculptural presence.

The swan occupies most of the canvas, its elongated neck forming a sweeping curve that leads the eye through the composition. Its head bends gracefully towards the body, creating an enclosed, almost circular movement within the image, while the raised wing introduces a contrasting vertical element. Thick black outlines define the silhouette with confidence, giving the figure a graphic quality that sits between drawing and painting.

Devon builds the body of the swan through layers of creamy white, beige and pale blue, allowing the texture of the oil pastel to remain visible across the surface. These rougher, tactile passages contrast with the comparatively flat turquoise ground, while small variations in colour prevent the figure from appearing entirely uniform. The dark contours further emphasise the contrast between the swan and its surroundings.

The simplicity of the composition gives the work a quiet, symbolic quality. Rather than presenting the swan as a naturalistic study, Devon transforms it into an expressive visual motif, focusing on its characteristic shape, gesture and presence. The title Ritual I adds another layer of interpretation, suggesting repetition, symbolism or a private act of contemplation.

The combination of acrylic and oil pastel is particularly effective in creating the work’s distinctive surface, bringing together the immediacy of painted colour with the dry, gestural marks of pastel. The result is a lively and tactile contemporary painting that balances graphic clarity with the spontaneity of the artist’s hand.
