The exquisite composition depicts mountains and temples in a distant snowy haze, and a woman in a kimono standing on the stage of the serene Kiyomizu Temple. First published in 1932. One of the most prominent printmakers of the New Printmaking Movement, Hasui Kawase is perhaps the most famous Japanese landscape painter of the 20th century. As a modern printmaker, Hasui Kawase gave first priority to the atmosphere of a place. In particular, their obsessive interest in depicting light characterizes the dreamlike atmosphere of their prints. Artists like Kawase Tomosui expressed a romantic yearning for nature, his rural roots, and the warmth of wooden architecture that was being lost in the Tokyo metropolis. Most of his prints were destroyed in a fire the year before his death. He was recognized as a Living National Treasure.
