Odysseus was a legendary archer and his bow played a major role in Homer's epic poem the Odyssey. The Romans used mercenary auxiliary troops of archers to augment the Legions. Mounted archers were used during the Civil wars between Caesar and Pompei, Germanicus made use of bowmen against the Chatii and Septimus Severus used archers in Mespotamia.
