Body: Canon FT

Released in 1966, the Canon FT represents the pinnacle of Canon’s pre-electronic SLR craftsmanship — a fully mechanical, precision-engineered 35mm camera built for serious photographers. It was part of the legendary Canon FL series, bridging the gap between the all-mechanical era and the  electronic generation that would follow.

The FT uses a focal-plane, horizontal-travel cloth shutter with speeds from 1 second to 1/1000 second + Bulb, and a mechanically governed shutter-timing system that requires no power to function. The meter is powered separately, using a CdS (cadmium sulfide) light cell located inside the mirror box, reading light through the lens (TTL) — a cutting-edge feature at the time.

The Canon FT’s construction is pure metal — brass and steel throughout, wrapped in leatherette. The film advance lever has a short, confident throw, and the shutter release feels clean. The mirror damping system and mechanical feel are robust, giving that unmistakable “Canon click” that defines 1960s Japanese engineering.

This was the kind of camera that photojournalists could rely on in any environment — simple, tough, and metering accurately through the lens long before it became the norm.

A compact telephoto zoom from Canon’s legendary FD series, introduced in 1980, designed with precision-machined aluminum construction and multi-coated optics for sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration, positioning on par with the S.S.C line.

The optical performance is classically Canon — excellent contrast, crisp edge definition, and a pleasing compression effect at 200mm. Despite its modest aperture, the lens produces lovely subject separation thanks to its longer focal length and minimal distortion.

The focus and zoom rings operate smoothly, with the one-touch push-pull mechanism allowing quick, precise focal adjustments. Canon’s Super Spectra Coating (SSC) ensures excellent resistance to flare and ghosting, giving color rendition that’s both rich and neutral.

Mechanically, it’s one of the most reliable zooms of its time — lightweight yet durable, with internal focusing that remains stable across decades.

The lens glass is clear, free from haze or fungus! The aperture blades are clean and snappy. The Canon FT body fires perfectly at all shutter speeds.

The pictures were taken in sunlight to highlight the surfaces and to show minor age-related marks on the metal and leatherette, both being in close to factory condition! This camera has been part of my personal collection for years, stored properly, and i feel it's time to find her a new home with someone that can take care of her and put her to good use by capturing this beautiful world again.
