An ancient bronze coin, minted in Judaea, by the Roman Procurator Valerius Gratus under Tiberius, and known as a prutah. The obverse features the legend IOV-ΛIA and date L-IA (Year 11, AD 24/5) across the field, with a palm branch in the centre. The reverse features TIB-KAI-CAΡ in three lines within a wreath. Patination and earthy encrustations to the surface, wear as consistent with age.
These bronze coins, known as prutah, were minted and distributed in Judaea under the government of the 4th Roman Prefect of Judaea, Valerius Gratus. Valerius Gratus is best remembered for his changes to the appointment of the high priesthood, deposing Ananus for substituted Ishmael ben Fabus, then for Eleazar, then Simon, and lastly Joseph Caiaphas, the son-in-law of Ananus.
