About the series: Frank Machalowski’s “CARS” series explores urban motion and visual compression through the technique of analog multiple exposure. By layering around a hundred photographs of randomly parked cars on 35-mm film, he creates ghostlike, hybrid shapes that seem to dissolve into their surroundings. Shot in various European cities in 2014, the images transform ordinary street scenes into dense visual palimpsests. The vehicles appear both present and fleeting, as if suspended between memory and reality. Through these overlapping exposures, Machalowski reveals how time, rhythm, and repetition shape our perception of urban environments.
