Matsunoo Myojin 松尾明神 / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
Matsunoo Myojin 松尾明神
Matsuoo Myojin is a god of sake brewing and a guardian deity who descended to make poisonous sake to be drunk by Yamatano-orochi under the command of Susanoo-no-Mikoto. He plays the most clownish role in Kagura.
A rare wooden mask representing Matsuo Myojin, the Shinto deity associated with sake brewing, mountain spirits, and agricultural fertility. Venerated at Matsuo Taisha in Kyoto and other shrines across Japan, Matsuo Myojin is known for his protective and purifying qualities, especially in relation to water and fermentation.
This mask, carved during the Showa period, features bold facial expressions—arched brows, intense eyes, and a dignified mouth—evoking the divine authority and rustic vitality of the god. The wood shows natural signs of age and use, with rope fittings for wear or display. Such masks were likely used in local festivals, shrine rituals, or kagura performances to honor the deity and invoke blessings. A culturally rich artifact that bridges folk craftsmanship, ritual practice, and mythological reverence. Ideal for collectors of Japanese religious masks, Shinto iconography, and regional festival arts.
