Cutie - Lemn - Makie Document Box-Fubako

■Antique Lacquer Document Box (Fubako 文箱) with Gold Makie 蒔絵 Crests ■Japan, ca. 1850–1880 — Late Edo to Early Meiji Period ■Dimensions ・Overall: H43 cm × W32.5 cm × D18 cm ・Upper compartment: H41 cm × W31 cm × D4 cm ・Lower compartment: H41 cm × W31 cm × D12 cm ■Description A large black-lacquer document box with a two-tiered interior, beautifully decorated with two bamboo-themed family crests (kamon 家紋) executed in fine gold makie. ・Maru-take Kyūmai-zasa 丸竹九枚笹 — Nine bamboo leaves ・Sanwari Shino-zasa 三割篠笹 — Three-part bamboo crest Bamboo (take 竹) and dwarf bamboo (sasa 笹) are auspicious symbols in Japan—one of the “Three Friends of Winter”—representing resilience, purity, and prosperity. Considered sacred in Shinto ritual and long associated with the imperial court, bamboo motifs were widely adopted as family crests. The presence of two different crests suggests that this box was likely created as a bridal trousseau item or a ceremonial gift symbolizing the union of two families, a common practice during the late Edo to early Meiji period. The reddish interior lacquer and 19th-century rim construction further support the dating. Originally used for storing important documents or as part of a bridal trousseau. Although there is age-related wear, the large size and scattered crests create a strong presence, and the gold- and silver-sprinkled interior lacquer remains beautiful. ■Condition There are age-related abrasions, flaking, small scratches, and cracks, as well as several areas of repaired overpainting. Please refer to the photos for details. ■All items are carefully package and shipped safely and promptly via Japan post EMS with tracking. 【Important notes】 ・International buyers are responsible for any import duties, taxes, and charges not included in the item price or shipping cost. Prompt payment of these fees ensures timely delivery. ・Shipping Details: items are shipped via Japan Post EMS or UGX . (It will be shipped to the United States via Japan Post UGX .) ・Damage and Issues: If you receive a damaged item, please contact me immediately before leaving a negative review.
