Featured is Jesus’ traditional baptism site on the banks of the Jordan River near Jericho. This location is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage destinations in the Holy Land since the 4th century AD, known also as “Qasr El-Yahud,” The depicted scene shows pilgrims renewing the tradition of symbolic baptism while immersing into the holy waters of the Jordan River . The artist notes in his journal the remarkable lack of inhibition, when some of the men and women stripped naked before entering the river. Drawn on location by the famous Scottish painter DAVID ROBERTS R.A. (1796-1864) in the year 1839 during the artist's trip to the Holy Land and surrounding area during 1838- 1839. Published in London by F.C.Moon on January2nd 1843 (this date is printed on the bottom margins) in the iconic monumental work: David Roberts, "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia ", one of the most desirable and famous travel plate books in the 19th century.
