Rare Mechanical Horse Racing Game ("Jeu de Courses") – Attributed to J.L. (Jean-Louis Jullien) – France, Circa 1900–1920

A rare and highly decorative French mechanical horse racing game, attributed to the renowned manufacturer Jean-Louis Jullien (J.L.), one of the leading producers of parlor games and mechanical amusements during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The game consists of a circular racecourse mounted within its original fitted wooden box, complete with hand-painted metal racehorses, cast metal course fittings, and a central marker bearing the French word "BUT" (goal/finish). The mechanism is operated by a side lever and remains in working condition, allowing the horses to race around the track as originally intended.

A cast "J.L." mark is present on the operating lever, supporting the attribution to Jean-Louis Jullien, whose horse-racing games were popular in France during the Belle Époque period and are now increasingly sought after by collectors of antique toys, mechanical amusements, and gaming memorabilia.

The game displays the charming craftsmanship characteristic of early French parlor entertainment, combining painted metal figures, felt-covered playing surfaces, and mechanical ingenuity. Such games were intended for family entertainment and friendly wagering, bringing the excitement of the racecourse into the home.

Origin: France
Attribution: Jean-Louis Jullien (J.L.)
Date: Circa 1900–1920
Material: Painted metal, wood, felt, and metal fittings
Dimensions: Approximately 33x33x23cm
Condition: Working condition. The original mechanism operates correctly. Age-related wear to the box, felt surface, paintwork, and metal components consistent with more than a century of use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed impression of the condition.

A scarce survivor of early twentieth-century French mechanical gaming, retaining its original box and functioning mechanism—an attractive collector's piece combining historical interest, decorative appeal, and mechanical entertainment.
