Pair of Japanese Imari plates – 19th century (Edo–Meiji transition)
Description
A matching pair of Japanese Imari porcelain plates, produced in Arita (Hizen Province), dating to the 19th century, late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1820–1870).
Each plate is decorated in the classic Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red, with reserved panels and floral motifs arranged around a central vase design. The scalloped rim and bold color contrasts are characteristic of Imari ware made for the Western export market.
The reverse is decorated with simple underglaze blue motifs, and the plates show the typical footring construction associated with 19th century Japanese export porcelain.
