Mask - Trä - Iwami Kagura demonmask
Japanese Iwami Kagura demon mask (Oni), traditionally used in Shinto Kagura performances from the Iwami region, Shimane Prefecture.
This expressive mask depicts a fierce oni with yellow horns, carved features, and an open mouth showing prominent fangs. The surface is hand-painted with visible aging and patina, reflecting its original use and age. Long natural hair is attached, enhancing the dramatic appearance.
The mask is mounted on a wooden backing board and designed as a wall-hanging decorative piece. On the reverse of the board, there is a handwritten inscription reading “Yamaya Minoru”, believed to indicate a local mask maker associated with the Iwami Kagura tradition. Such signatures are commonly found on Shōwa-period kagura masks made for performance, dedication, or commemorative purposes.
Estimated period: Shōwa era, circa 1970s
Origin: Japan (Iwami region, Shimane Prefecture)
This is a powerful and authentic example of regional Japanese folk art, suitable for collectors of Japanese masks, Kagura-related objects, or traditional theatrical artifacts.
