Valeri Svetlitsky (1908-?) - Courtyard in Central Asia

Valeri Svetlitsky (1938–2018) Courtyard in Central Asia 1990 Oil on canvas Size (without frame): 70 × 90 cm Size (with frame): approx. 87 × 107 cm Signature: Signed and dated on the reverse, upper right corner Valeri Svetlitsky was born and worked in Russia, graduating in 1967 from the renowned Moscow State Art Institute named after V. Surikov — one of the country’s most distinguished art academies. In 1969 he became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, later establishing a respected career in Moscow. His works are represented in museums and private collections throughout Russia, Europe and beyond. Even when grounded in real visual observation, Svetlitsky’s paintings shift toward essentialised form — broad, confident brushstrokes, pulsating colour surfaces and distilled compositional rhythm. His works are expressive and atmospheric, often reducing detail to amplify movement, light and emotion. Courtyard in Central Asia (1990) depicts a quiet, sun-filled moment: figures resting and working within a distinctive inner courtyard setting found somewhere in Central Asia. Forms dissolve into saturated, tactile brushwork, giving the scene warmth, calm and a sense of lived memory. A vivid, mature work showcasing the artist’s distinctive balance between figuration and abstraction. A strong, collectible piece with a clear history of ownership. Provenance: • Private collection, Ukraine • From 2002: Private collection, Tallinn • From 2023: Flegma Gallery, Amsterdam/Tallinn Market indication: Comparable works by Valeri Svetlitsky—particularly from the 1980s–1990s and of this scale—tend to achieve strong collector interest due to their expressive style and museum-level provenance. Considering the size, mature period of creation, and the Central Asian subject, this work positions itself in the mid-to-upper value range for the artist’s market.
