Bohemia, Biedermeier period, first half of the 19th century Antique cup made of Bohemian ruby crystal glass, crafted in the Biedermeier tradition. The piece is made of rich ruby glass, characteristic of Bohemian glassworks in the first half of the 19th century. The shape of the cup is classic for a Freundschaftsbecher: a massive bowl on a stable stem with a wide profiled base. The body is decorated with deep diamond facets with oval ‘lenses’ that emphasise the play of light and depth of colour. The decoration is complemented by white enamel painting with Biedermeier-style floral ornamentation, evenly distributed across the body and base. The upper edge is decorated with a gilded rim.
