In Euskaltzaindia (1980), Chillida builds the composition from a dark horizontal band crossed by a fragmented central form that seems to emerge from the void. The title refers to the Royal Academy of the Basque Language, an institution dedicated to the preservation and study of Euskera, reflecting Chillida’s deep connection with Basque culture and thought. As in many of his works, the reference is not illustrative but conceptual: form becomes a symbol of identity, memory, and collective construction. The work functions as a synthesis between drawing, sculpture, and visual architecture, where the void has the same importance as matter.
