Year 1768, London - Creamer - .925 silver
A beautifully made English sterling silver creamer from the Georgian period, dated 1768.
The body is decorated in repoussé with a detailed rural scene depicting two dogs in motion within a landscape setting. In the background appear architectural elements including a farmhouse and a church, surrounded by foliage and decorative scrollwork. The decoration is executed with good depth and detail.
The creamer stands on three feet and features a decorative handle with elegant curves. The rim is finished with a scalloped edge.
The underside bears the London hallmarks:
The crowned leopard’s head for the London Assay Office (used until 1821), the lion passant for sterling silver, and the date letter “n” corresponding to the year 1768.
The maker’s mark is partially worn and appears as the letter “W.”
The piece has a rich and attractive patina with iridescent tones ranging from blue and purple to golden hues.
The condition is good overall. The structure is stable with light surface wear. One dog’s face shows a small irregularity that appears to originate from the production of the piece.
