The Dong Son people were very skilled in bronze casting and at the time they had no other rival party in the region competent of making bronzes on a large scale. These bronzes were very precious valuable goods who were exported to large parts of Southeast Asia. The earliest bronze objects in the region were plowshares, axes, spearheads, fishhooks and ornaments. Around 500 BCE characteristics Dong Son objects began appear, skillfully wrought bracelets, bronze arrowheads, knives, jade objects and pottery. These objects also included the bronze drums that have become recognized as the symbol of Dong Son craft and civilization.
The society was predominantly agricultural, with rice as staple crop. As skilled seafarers they established trade links that spread their cultural influence across Southeast Asia, from Southern China to Indonesia.
The Dond Son culture is closely tied to the origins of the Vietnamese nation and is seen as the foundation of Vietnamese identity and heritage, recognized for its contributions to the region"s historical narrative, cultural continuity and their achievement for transfer the Mekong Delta in one large rice field.
