Ernst Haas (1921-1986) was an early, one of the first members of the legendary photo agency "Magnum" and in 1960 he became its fourth president.

Here in the bit more uncommon hardcover edition with separate dustjacket (the title was published in paperback also). 

BOOK AND DUSTJACKET IN VERY FRESH CONDITION.

'In 1947, the "Rotes Kreuz" ("Red Cross") used Ernst Haas' reportage and photographs to identify or reunite war victims, which was subsequently published in a feature in Life magazine. Warren Trabant showed Ernst Haas' 'Homecoming' photographs to Robert Capa, before they were published.'

'At that time, the photographer Ernst Haas was in Vienna. 'At that time', that was in 1945. Haas photographed the end of a world, and the beginning after the end of the world.
Later, the poet Ingeborg Bachmann saw his photos. She wanted to describe what it was like to leave the horror behind. I know what she had said when the pictures awakened her memory. "Despite everything," she had said, "it was the most beautiful time of my life. We had the feeling that we could start everything anew."
Ingeborg Bachmann died before she could finish the manuscript.
Whether her hopes of that time were disappointed, I don't know, because I haven't read the fragments. I went after my own memory.'

"After reviewing his work, Robert Capa invited Ernst Haas to travel to Paris and join the then two-year-old international photographic cooperative Magnum Photos. Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David Chim Seymour, Werner Bischof and William Vandivert were already members. In 1950, Ernst Haas then became a full member of Magnum."

Condition:
Book inside and outside excellent, very fresh and very clean with no marks and with no foxing. Dustjacket fresh and complete with no tears, with no taped tears and with no missing parts; little trace of use, remarkable defects. Overall very fine, better condition than usual.

Great, widely unknown photobook by Ernst Haas from 1975 (!) - in very fresh condition.

"In 1954, Robert Capa, Magnum's first president, was killed on assignment during the First Indochina War. The same year, Werner Bischof died in a car accident in the Andes. After their deaths, Ernst Haas was elected to Magnum's board of directors and travelled to Indochina himself to cover the war.
In 1958, Haas became vice-president of Magnum. After the death of David 'Chim' Seymour in Suez in 1959, Ernst Haas became Magnum's fourth president in 1960. He made significant and lasting contributions to the organisation as its leader. Ernst Haas had a deep understanding of the cooperative's mission and encouraged its members to strive for excellence and innovation. In a letter to Magnum's members, Ernst Haas wrote:
"Each of us wants to make beautiful, eye-catching and extraordinary images. Each of us struggles with our own style. Change comes not only through willpower but never through contentment. Let us be more critical of each other: It will bring us closer. Let us find a new common denominator in the struggle not to follow our own standards of invention. Don't cover - discover!'"
