One of Spain's most renowned and admired living artists. His hyperrealistic paintings display a luminosity inherited from the great masters, establishing him as a unique, symbolic and enigmatic artist for whom the painting process is as important as the finished work.
Throughout his professional career, he has received numerous awards and honours, including: the Gold Medal for Fine Arts (1983), the Pablo Iglesias Award (1983); the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts (1985); Full Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (1993); Patron of the Prado Museum (1998-2009); Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York (2004); the Ciudad Alcalá de Henares Prize for the Arts (2004); Medal of Honour (2004) from the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Santander; Velázquez Prize for Plastic Arts (2006); Gold Medal for Fine Arts from Madrid City Council (2010); Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia (2017).
