Shingen Plains 新源平野 - Limited Edition 159/200 - Saburō Miyata 宮田三郎 (1924-2013) - Japan
Mr. Miyata made it his life work to depict his home country Japan. It took Mr. Miyata 30 years to complete. It is astonishing how recognizable Miyata could make the subjects of his prints even when simplifying the colors and shapes, an incredible talent. Miyata's prints are very recognizable, as he created a unique style in which he eliminated details and used colors and shapes in their most simple forms to create a vibrant but still very recognizable image of reality.
The term "Shingen Plains" refers to the Kawanakajima Plain (Kawanakajima Hachimanpara) in Japan, the historical battlefield where the powerful warlord Takeda Shingen fought a series of famous battles against his rival Uesugi Kenshin. The Battles of Kawanakajima became one of "the most cherished tales in Japanese military history", the epitome of Japanese chivalry and romance, mentioned in epic literature, paintings, woodblock prints, and movies. In 1541, Shingen began his conquest of Shinano Province. In 1550, Shingen advanced once again into Shinano and quickly conquered Hayashi Castle, Kiribara and Fukashi Castle by siege. These had been controlled by Ogasawara Nagatoki, who fled to Murakami Yoshikiyo. In October 1550, Shingen began the Sieges of Toishi Castle, from which position he intended to carry out the final attack on the main Murakami castle of Katsurao. However, in November the siege was abandoned and Shingen's army was counterattacked by Murakami, and almost routed. The following year, though, Murakami was forced to leave the castle and the successful Siege of Katsurao (1553) ensued. (source: Wikipedia)
Saburo Miyata was born in Nagano prefecture in 1924, but worked mainly in Tokyo. He founded the Tokyo Print Research Institute in Tokyo. Miyata has had 250 solo exhibitions of his work as well as many publications.
This specific print has never been framed and always stored in a dark space. There is very slight thinning of the paper in the left top corner which is not visible from the front, where the print was attached to a mount by the publisher. As such, I rate this print as in very good to excellent condition.
Due to the large size of the print, it will be shipped registered in a tube. This allows for drastically reduced shipping costs.
