Bocio Fetish Figure — Fon, Benin — Wood & cowrie shells — H 69 cm with stand
Origin: Fon people, Benin
Material: Wood, cowrie shells
Height: 69 cm with stand
Provenance: Auction
Presumed age: Early–mid 20th century
A striking and powerful Bocio figure from the Fon people of Benin, carved in a bold, stylized form that fully embodies the aesthetic and spiritual essence of Vodun practice.
The term Bocio (also spelled Botchio, Boccio) combines bo, meaning power or magical force, and cio, meaning corpse. Far from being funerary, these figures were created as active spiritual protectors, intended to channel, repel, or contain harmful forces. Historically, they were placed in the royal palace courtyard, at crossroads, near houses, or in sacred groves to protect individuals and communities.
This example is a robust, compact male figure, carved with a cylindrical body devoid of arms and legs, emphasizing presence rather than anatomy. The powerful neck and head, with eyes represented by cowrie shells, give the sculpture an intense, watchful expression. Despite its simplicity, it radiates a calm but undeniable authority, ready to shield its owner from malevolent influences.
The surface shows age-consistent wear and an appealing patina.
Mounted on a custom wooden stand for display.
