A Satsuma ceramic koro (incense burner) finely decorated in gold and polychrome enamels, with a dense millefiori motif on a gilt ground.
The incense burner rests on three feet and features a domed, pierced cover, modeled to resemble chrysanthemum petals.
Signed underneath the base.
The chrysanthemum (菊, kiku), the symbolic flower of the Japanese Imperial family, represents longevity, renewal, and refinement. Frequently recurring in the decorative arts, it is often associated with autumn and nobility.
Satsuma ware is one of the finest expressions of Japanese ceramics. Originating from the ancient province of Satsuma (now Kagoshima), it was produced as early as the Edo period (1603–1868) using low-temperature firing, which gives it the characteristic surface with craquelure and vibrant decorations.
