Hier, gesetzt, Gras sprießt - Holzschnitt - Akiyama Iwao 秋山巌 (1921-2014) - Japan - Heisei Zeit (1989-heute)

Iwao Akiyama [kokoni ochitsuki kusa moyuru]"Here, Settled, Grass Sprouting" Woodblock print / 1991 Edition: 30/150 Signed and signed This work depicts two charming figures, a signature motif of Iwao Akiyama. Rounded outlines, simple lines, and small, red eyes. At first glance, they appear simple and comical, but their presence is somehow quiet and profound, posing questions to the viewer's heart. At the top of the painting are the words "Here, Settled, Grass Sprouting." This is a very calming and positive message: "Settled here, grass will soon sprout." These beings have finally found a place to call home after their wandering. At their feet, the presence of new life is quietly brimming. In this work, the warmth of the woodblock print is created by the overlapping black and gray of the ink, the soft texture of the handmade washi paper, and the slight misalignment and bleeding caused by the woodblock. The small red used for the eyes is particularly striking, glowing quietly like a beacon of life amid the overall stillness of the image. This is a unique expression born from the traces of handcraft that can never be achieved with mass-produced prints. ◆About Iwao Akiyama◆ Iwao Akiyama (1921-2014) was a Japanese printmaker and painter, known especially for his unique sumi-e and woodblock print styles. His work is characterized by strong lines, simple and bold compositions, and poetic elements, and he had a great influence on the Japanese art scene, especially after the war.
