This modern piece features striking vibrant blue and gold patterns. The vibrant blue color reveals a deep, lush ocean blue ashtray upon closer inspection. The grooves are for cigars. -Morino Taimei- First selected for the Nitten Exhibition in 1957. Received the Nitten Special Selection and Hokuto Award in 1960. Has taught ceramics at the University of Chicago since 1962. Member of the Japan Art Academy and a Person of Cultural Merit. Awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon (a medal awarded to those with outstanding achievements recognized by the Emperor of Japan). He decorated this ashtray with layers of glazes he mixed himself, giving the color depth and vividness. His father, the ceramicist Yoshimitsu Morino, comes from a long-standing tradition, but he pursues avant-garde, modern aesthetics while still building on traditional pottery techniques.
