Ceremonial Ornament
Origin: Borana people
Region: Ethiopia / Kenya
Material: Bronze
Diameter: 16 cm
Height: 33 cm (with stand)
Provenance: Ex collection Alan Donovan
The Borana people, a sub-group of the Oromo-speaking populations, inhabit southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. The name Borana is commonly translated as “free people,” reflecting their pastoral and nomadic way of life.
This type of bronze ornament was traditionally sewn onto the skirts worn by Borana women during important ceremonies. It symbolized their status as mothers of a circumcised male child, marking a significant social and familial milestone.
This example is of considerable age and displays a superb honey-colored patina, the result of prolonged use and handling. It stands out for its exceptional size and quality of execution, placing it among the finest examples of its kind.
At the center rises a striking faceted and grooved conical protuberance, approximately 5 cm high. This element is likely phallic in nature and may refer symbolically to the kalasha, a phallic head ornament worn by men of rank among the Borana and neighboring Konso peoples. This powerful central motif enhances both the visual impact and the symbolic depth of the piece.
Mounted on a custom stand for display.
