Drei Vintage-Japanische Kokeshi-Püppchen mit Bob-Frisur von Munehiro, Tanaka Kojo und Takeshi. - Holz - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)
Item Description
This lot consists of three Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls with traditional okappa (bobbed-hair) hairstyles. Each doll was created by a different artist, and the description below clearly identifies the maker and characteristics of each piece individually.
Left doll – by Munehiro
The leftmost kokeshi was created by Munehiro. It features a softly rounded body with a slightly flared lower section and a distinctive bobbed hairstyle resembling a gentle, feminine silhouette. The kimono is decorated with red and white plum blossoms (ume), painted in a restrained and elegant manner. The simple composition and calm expression give this piece a quiet, lyrical presence typical of Munehiro’s work.
Center doll – by Tanaka Kojo (田中晃常), titled “Temari”
The center kokeshi was created by Tanaka Kojo, an award-winning artist at the All-Japan Kokeshi Contest. This piece is titled “Temari” and depicts a young girl holding a traditional temari ball. The facial expression is distinctive and immediately recognizable as Tanaka Kojo’s style, while the temari and kimono patterns are executed with exceptional care and fine brushwork. The artist’s mark is present on the base.
Tanaka Kojo founded Tanaka Gangu in Gunma Prefecture in 1968 and is well known for portraying young girls with expressions that differ subtly from conventional kokeshi styles.
Right doll – by Takeshi
The rightmost kokeshi was created by Takeshi, a prize-winning kokeshi artist who has received awards including the Tourism Association Chairman’s Award and the Forestry Agency Director’s Award. This doll is taller and more slender than the other two, with a composed and serene expression. The kimono is adorned with boldly painted camellia flowers (tsubaki), showing confident brushwork and a strong decorative impact. The artist’s mark is present on the base.
All three dolls show age-related wear such as surface scratches, small abrasions, and natural patina consistent with vintage wooden kokeshi. No major cracks or structural damage are observed.
