Konoshima Okoku (1877-1938) was a Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto who studied with Imao Keinen. He was a frequent winner of prizes at the Bunten and served as juror for both the Bunten and the Teiten. He was known as a delicate and sensitive artist, and excelled in the depiction of animals, landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings. He died in 1938 when he was 61 years old.
In recent years, his popularity has grown beyond the borders of Japan, as he was one of the leading masters of modern Japanese painting. Recently an important exhibition was co-organized by the Fukuda Museum of Art and the Saga Arashiyama Bunkakan, features over 100 works of Konoshima, including 52 newly discovered paintings and works exhibited at the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions.
Konoshima Okoku’s works are in the collections of the British museum, Fukuda Museum, Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and Seattle Art Museum, among others.
