Sehr großes japanisches Tempelrelief - Keyaki (Zelkove – Japanischer Ahorn) - Japan - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

A majestic, very large Japanese temple carving of a phoenix 鳳凰 (hô’ô), masterfully rendered from keyaki 欅 (zelkova – Japanese oak) hardwood with a rich aged patina. This impressive piece once formed the upper beam of an arch in the central hall of a temple, as documented in the attached photos. It was originally placed at the back wall, centrally positioned in the main worship space. The temple was located in Kyôto and affiliated with Shôkoku-ji 相国寺, a prominent branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. The fierce and regal phoenix is depicted mid-flight, its wings dramatically outstretched and beak slightly agape. Traces of original red pigment remain, subtly highlighting its expressive form. The reverse is carved with swirling cloud motifs. Period: Japan – Edo period (1615–1868) Dimensions: Width 192 cm, Depth 47 cm. Considering its age and function in a very good condition. Traces of wear along the sides. Old restoration attachment head. Imported directly from Japan, this piece was acquired from a temple that was being disassembled due to renovation or relocation. Please refer to the photos for visual documentation of its original architectural placement and for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to its exceptional size, this piece is available for pick-up near Amsterdam, the Netherlands, at the time of purchase. We also offer pre-quoted delivery to selected areas: – The Netherlands: €130 – Belgium: Surrounding region of Antwerpen and Brussel: €200 – France: Paris and surrounding region: €220 For all other destinations, transport costs will be calculated separately. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
