This beautiful woodblock print is Kyoto Hyakkei・Hamurogawa (京都百景・叶室川), a snowscape-themed work created around 2009 by Masao Idô (井堂雅夫), a master of modern Japanese woodblock prints. It is part of his Kyoto Hyakkei (京都百景) series. Renowned for his blending of four-season landscapes with traditional woodblock craftsmanship, Idô developed a soft and delicate artistic style, with his works distinguished by the unique Idô Green (井堂绿) color palette.
The print depicts a midwinter snow scene: pine trees and the ground are blanketed in thick snow, while traditional Japanese buildings in Kyoto’s Hamurogawa area are nestled among the woods, with a wooden bridge stretching across the snow-covered ground. Dominated by off-white and dark green tones, the piece exudes a serene, understated atmosphere of wabi-sabi (侘寂). The white dots floating in the sky represent falling snowflakes, rendered with meticulous detail.
Inscriptions on the print:
Upper right corner: Kyoto Hyakkei Kyoto no Kage Hamurogawa (京都百景 京都の景 叶室川) – the work’s title
Lower right corner: Masao ga (雅夫画) – the artist’s signature
Left side: Chō Yanagitani, Satsu Sasaki (彫 柳谷 摺 佐々木) – the traditional ukiyo-e “three craftsmen” notation, indicating the carver (Yanagitani) and printer (Sasaki)
Due to age, the paper shows slight signs of oxidation yellowing and other minor traces. Overall, the work is in good condition.

Artist's Note:
Masao Idô (井堂雅夫) was a Japanese modern ukiyo-e (現代浮世絵) style printmaker and representative creator of the "Kyoto One Hundred Views" (京都百景) series. He invented the "Idô Green" (井堂緑) hue, integrating traditional ukiyo-e with modern aesthetics. His works are collected by institutions including the Library of Congress (US) and Japan Post. Participating in series such as "Kyoto One Hundred Views" (京都百景) and "Rimpa-e" (琳派描), he stands as one of the iconic figures in modern Japanese printmaking for documenting regional culture.
