While grounded in the traditions of Mashiko pottery, Sakata’s practice is recognised for pursuing an independent, sculptural sense of beauty, and these two forms read as objects as much as functional vessels. A particularly distinctive feature here is the colour and atmosphere achieved through high-temperature carbonisation firing. The resulting black pottery is considered uncommon within Mashiko ware, and these pieces show the refined, chic jet-black tones characteristic of this carbonisation process. Both bases are signed. The spiral vase is not watertight, as water leaks from the side. However, it can be used as a vase by placing an inner insert inside. Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. He has exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, and is known for exploring black pottery alongside paper, glass, lighting, and other media. Minor blemishes and signs of use are present. Minor kiln-related cracks are also present. Please review all photos carefully for the complete condition. Dimensions of Spiral Vase: approx. H 26.2 cm W 9 cm D 6.5 cm Dimensions of Square Vase: approx. H 18 cm W 8.8 cm D 8 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
