Indus-Tal Terracotta Indus-Tal Terrakotta-Gefäß mit polychromer zoomorpher Dekoration. - 9.5 cm (Ohne mindestpreis)

NO SHIPPING OUTSIDE THE EU. A fine terracotta vessel from the Indus Valley Civilisation adorned with polychromatic zoomorphic figures. The vessel is cylindrical in shape, featuring high sides with a wide mouth and carinated base with a raised circular foot. The body is decorated with two panels separated by a sequence of vertical lines filled with overpainted green and red pigment. One panel depicts a quadruped with long horns, a long geometric-patterned body and a long tail, possibly an ibex. The other panel depicts another quadruped with a mane and sharp teeth and claws, reminiscent of a lion. Both animals are rendered in vivid red and green pigments and outlined in black pigment. The background of both panels features polychromatic motifs in various abstract shapes. Earthy encrustations, as well as wear, such as minor chips and scratches, to the surface. There is a chip to the rim of the vessel. The Indus Valley Civilisation was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and the Near East. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy. They were accustomed to creating small terracotta figurines and vessels, many of which took the form of zoomorphic characters. Measurements: (circa) Diameter 12.4cm x H 9.5cm Provenance: Aquired through Catawiki from respected London-based antiquities dealer Ancient & Oriental in May 2025. Before that from the David Gold (deceased) collection, 1970’s. With certificate of authenticity, from Ancient & Oriental. NO SHIPPING OUTSIDE EU. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as, a TL test, analysis of metals(XRF-test), lapidary tests, analysis of pigments or radiography scans have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
