Spardose - Holz, Messing - A wonderfully characterful late Victorian novelty money box
A wonderfully characterful late Victorian novelty moneybox, carved in the form of a rustic stool or coffer and dated 1884 on the hand‑tooled brass cartouche to the front. The plaque is engraved with the charming motto “Mr George is no a fool he puts his pennies in his stool 1884”, suggesting it was made as a personalised gift – perhaps for a thrifty youngster or as a humorous presentation piece for a “George” in the household.
The box itself is fashioned from roughly hewn timber, deliberately left with an irregular edge to mimic a chunk of tree trunk, then raised on four simple legs; the lid is embellished with applied brass bosses and a narrow coin slot, giving it the look of a piece of folk‑art furniture in miniature. Accompanying the box is a metal pocket coin‑holder and a small group of Victorian pennies, completing the story of careful saving in the age of Queen Victoria and making the lot a ready‑made display. Underneath the box is a hinged base which opens one way to release the coins inside.
A delightful one‑off object that combines social history, vernacular craftsmanship and numismatic interest, ideal for a collector of Victorian folk art, moneyboxes or personalised presentation pieces – or simply as a talking‑point on a shelf or desk.
