Byôbu (Faltbildschirm) - Seide, Papier, Gold Leaf, lackiertes Holz, Maulbeerpapier - Japan - Gemälde des 18. Jahrhunderts (Edo-Zeit)
A splendid, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring an intricate Tosa School 土佐派 painting on gold leaf, depicting from high-bird view many different important places, complexes, temples, mountains in and around, or near the then capital Kyôto 京都. All paired with a small inscribed cartouches with the different names.
Among the many scenes, the Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺 complex appears in the upper right, showing the temple on stilts and the Otowa Waterfall, the sacred spring below the main hall. Beneath this area a large temple complex is visible with the imposing Daibutsuden 大佛殿, the original name for the Great Buddha Hall of Tôdai-ji 東大寺 in Nara.
In the lower centre is the Yamaboko Junkô 山鉾巡行, the float procession of the Gion Festival 祇園祭. Crowds of festively dressed townspeople fill the streets, their brightly coloured kimono enlivening the scene. Two tall floats with roofs surmounted by long yari 槍 (spears) dominate the procession. Many other well-known sites appear throughout the composition encompassed by dense gold leaf clouds.
The painting is executed in colour and ink on lustrous gold leaf. The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims, a slender green one and a broader blue one, and is set within a black lacquered wooden frame with protective fittings. The frame was expertly and expensively refurbished at a later date in Japan, a level of work requiring significant skill and knowledge.
