Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung

Darwin Glass
Impact Glass
Tasmania
Crater at 42°18'15"S 145°39'27"E
Crater diameter 1.2 km
Formed 0.816 +/- 0.007 million years ago by a meteorite impact.

19.04g 59 x 31 x 14 mm with flowing structure and solidified droplets

Impact glasses, or crater glasses, are terrestrial rocks that melt into glass due to the energy released during large meteorite impacts. Unlike tektites, which ejected jets of rock vapor from the crater, impact glasses were 'only' molten. Crater glasses contain more water than tektites and are found in the immediate vicinity of the impact site.

Darwin glass is usually black to grayish and opaque. It is primarily found in small pieces weighing a few grams, often with fractured surfaces. Large pieces, being very rare, command a higher price per gram than small pieces. Also highly sought after are the rare pieces that are gray to green and transparent, as well as pieces with flowing structures.

Scale cube is 1 x 1 x 1 cm

International Meteorite Collectors Association member number #3503
