Item Description This is a creative kokeshi doll titled “振袖”. Romanized title: Furisode The title can be translated as “Long-sleeved Kimono”. The doll is hand-carved from wood and finished with hand-painted details. It depicts a young woman wearing a bright red furisode kimono, traditionally worn on formal occasions. The kimono is decorated with subtle floral motifs, and the obi features a checkerboard pattern. The face is softly rendered with closed eyes and a gentle expression, while the natural wood grain remains visible, adding warmth and depth to the surface. The back of the body bears the artist’s handwritten signature. Minor surface wear and small marks consistent with age and handmade wooden objects can be observed. Artist Sansaku Sekiguchi (1925–2012) was a Japanese kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. He devoted himself to creative kokeshi from the late 1950s and became one of the leading figures in the field. He received the Prime Minister of Japan Award three times and was officially recognized by the Japanese government as a “Master Craftsman of Contemporary Japan”. His works have been exhibited internationally and are held in museum collections.
