Mid-Century Modernist/ Brutalist Bronze Wall Cross with Early Christian Symbols
A striking, sculptural religious wall cross in heavy cast bronze with a deep, dark patina and expressive, hand-worked surface. This powerful modernist interpretation of a Christian cross dates to the mid-20th century and features rich early Christian symbolism in relief.
This unique design incorporates the ancient Ichthys (fish) symbol for Christ at the center, Alpha and Omega on the arms symbolising God as the beginning and the end, a dove-like motif representing the Holy Spirit, and flowing water lines at the base referring to baptism and “living water”. The raw, textured Brutalist surface gives the piece a strong sculptural presence, bridging sacred symbolism with modern design language.
A rare and characterful devotional object with strong wall impact — equally suitable for a religious interior, modernist collection, or sculptural wall display. Nowhere to be found online.
Details
Material: Cast bronze
Period: Mid-20th century
Technique: Cast with hand-finished textured surface
Weight: approx. 2.1 kg
Dimensions: 29 x 24 x 4 cm
Condition: In excellent condition, beautiful natural patina, no cracks or repairs

Historical / Cultural Context
From the 1950s–1970s, religious art was increasingly influenced by modernist and Brutalist aesthetics. Traditional Christian iconography was reinterpreted in bold, abstract forms, often using heavy materials and expressive textures. This cross is a fine example of that movement, combining early Christian symbols with a distinctly modern sculptural language.
A powerful, symbolic and collectible wall piece with strong visual presence.
