Vom Verkäufer bereitgestellte Beschreibung
19th Century hand-carved wooden wagon forepart ornament with horse and serpent
Origin: Netherlands
Date: 1850–1900
Hand-carved wooden ornament originally mounted on the voorschamel, the front beam of a traditional Dutch boerenwagen to which the front axle was attached. The carving depicts a rearing horse emerging from stylised waves, intertwined with a scaled serpent and terminating in a foliate tail element.
Style and use: Rural folk art; functional wagon ornamentation with symbolic and decorative purpose.
Condition: Structurally stable. Visible age-related cracks along the serpent’s body and base, consistent with natural wood movement. Surface wear, minor losses and patina from long-term use. Rear mounting points present. No recent restorations observed.
Value basis: Large scale at 90 cm length, detailed hand carving with pronounced relief, and direct association with 19th-century Dutch agricultural transport culture support collector interest in European rural folk art.
Context: Representative of 19th to early 20th century Dutch wagon decoration, where carved voorschamel elements expressed regional craftsmanship and identity.
Dimensions: H 21 cm × W 90 cm × D 6 cm
