Item Description
富洋 Tomihiro (reading unconfirmed) — Shigaraki Ware Flower Vase with Incised Berry Motif, with Original Wooden Box (Tomobako)
A striking flower vase crafted in the revered tradition of Shigaraki ware, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns with a ceramic history spanning over 1,300 years. This substantial, egg-shaped vessel features two small loop handles on the upper shoulder, lending it an archaic dignity reminiscent of ancient Japanese storage jars.
The surface displays a dramatic interplay of naturalistic firing effects characteristic of authentic Shigaraki pottery: deep iron-brown and charcoal tones are punctuated by warm tan and sage-green ash glaze pooling, particularly around the shoulder and neck. One side is adorned with a finely incised botanical motif — a cluster of round berries surrounded by elongated leaves and trailing stems — rendered with confident, fluid linework. The opposite side features a raised, flame-shaped glaze relief in luminous olive-green, adding a sculptural accent to the composition.
The neck is glazed in celadon-green, contrasting beautifully with the rugged lower body where speckled natural ash glaze emerges from the dark clay like stars against a night sky. The base reveals the classic unglazed Shigaraki clay foot with characteristic kiln markings. Comes in its original signed wooden box (tomobako) inscribed "信楽燒 花瓶 富洋" with a personal seal, certifying authenticity.
