正文 Masafumi — Hanshidō Cast Bronze Vase
This elegant cast bronze vase (dō kabin) exemplifies the refined beauty of Japanese metal craft.
The ovoid body rises gracefully to a subtly tapered shoulder and a small, clean-rimmed opening — a form rooted in the classical kabin tradition favored for tea ceremony settings.
The surface is finished in a rich deep brown patina with dramatic mottled purple-bronze (hanshidō) markings — organic, unpredictable cloudlike patches in crimson, rose, and slate tones that bloom across the body.
This distinctive surface effect is achieved through a highly skilled firing and oxidation process unique to Japanese bronze casting; no two pieces can ever look alike, making each work a singular creation of fire and metal.
A maker's seal reading "正文" (Masafumi) is impressed into the base, authenticating the work.
The vase is well-suited for both chabana (tea ceremony flower arrangement) and contemporary interior display, its lustrous patina providing a striking contrast to both seasonal blooms and minimalist settings.

Artist Profile
Masafumi is a Japanese metalwork artist specializing in cast copper (chūdō) craft, working within the long tradition of Japanese metal artistry. Cast copper vessels have been prized in Japan for centuries as refined objects for the tea ceremony and interior decoration. The hanshidō (mottled purple-copper) technique employed in this vase is a hallmark of skilled Japanese copper casting, in which the surface is treated through a carefully controlled oxidation process to produce unpredictable, cloud-like patterns in deep crimson and purple tones — a result that can never be exactly replicated. This tradition of functional yet deeply aesthetic metalwork reflects the Japanese craft philosophy of finding beauty in the natural behavior of materials.
