This is a bronze sculpture of a boy and an ox by the metal artist Hidemine 秀峰.
The boy is riding on the back of the ox while playing a flute. The ox has a very calm and gentle expression, creating a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.
This motif is known as “Ushi Dōji 牛童子” (Ox-Herding Boy).
In Japanese and East Asian philosophy, the boy and the ox symbolize the process of seeking enlightenment. The boy represents one's present self, while the ox represents the ideal, ultimate self that one strives to attain. The scene expresses the spiritual journey toward inner harmony, wisdom, and self-realization.
